The team at Eye Research Foundation of San Diego includes experienced eye care professionals who are widely regarded as leaders in their field. Everyone at ERFSD is dedicated to supporting research and accelerating treatment solutions for blinding eye conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa.

David Schanzlin, MD

President & Founder

Dr. David Schanzlin is a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 40 years of experience in cataract and refractive surgery, comprehensive eye care, and clinical studies. In addition to providing exceptional patient care and making contributions to the advancement of ophthalmology, Dr. Schanzlin has also dedicated a portion of his career to education; he has served as a Professor of Ophthalmology at Saint Louis University and the Shiley Eye Center at the University of California-San Diego. Dr. Schanzlin is highly regarded in the field of ophthalmology and his commitment has been recognized with several prestigious honors including several “Best Doctors in America” and the Jose I. Barraquer Award.

Scientific Advisory Board

Julio Echegoyen, MD, Ph.D

Dr. Julio Echegoyen is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in Cataract, Corneal and Anterior Segment surgery. He received his medical degree and a PhD in Biological Sciences from University of California, Irvine and went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and a fellowship in corneal, external disease and refractive surgery at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Echegoyen is highly experienced in treating a range of eye conditions and he provides patient care at Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute in San Diego.

Nikolas London, MD, FACS

Dr. Nikolas JS London is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in Vitreoretinal Surgery. Dr. London graduated from UCLA and received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. He went on to complete his residency at California Pacific Medical Center and his Vitreoretinal Surgery fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, where he received the Ron Michels award, a prestigious recognition of the best Vitreoretinal Surgery fellow in the nation. Dr. London provides patient care at Retina Consultants San Diego and he also serves as the Chief of Ophthalmology at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
