About Eye Research Foundation of San Diego

Founded in 2013 by Ophthalmologist David J. Schanzlin, M.D, Eye Research Foundation of San Diego is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to develop sight-saving eye care solutions. Eye Research Foundation of San Diego paves the way for innovative vision care by supporting the research of established experts and also investing in the next generation of vision care leaders.

The History of Eye Research Foundation of San Diego

Dr. Schanzlin has dedicated his career to improving vision. He is well-known for providing high-quality eye care at his clinical practice in San Diego and he is also passionate in his involvement and support of ongoing research to develop treatment for blinding eye diseases. His commitment to patient care and the science of vision care has been recognized with many awards and honors.

Dr. Schanzlin’s longtime devotion to vision care innovation led him to found Eye Research Foundation of San Diego. Pursuing a cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa became a primary goal of Eye Research Foundation of San Diego after Dr. Schanzlin met Father Robert Spitzer. Father Spitzer is a Jesuit priest, former president of Gonzaga University and a prominent philosopher and speaker. He also suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a genetic disease that causes progressive vision loss.

A key part of our mission is to support and inspire ophthalmology residents who are interested in clinical research. We currently provide funding to the accredited ophthalmology program at St. Louis University.
